Formerly a tele-communications centre c.1936 the Cable Station carried Tasmania's first telephone link to the mainland establishing it's significant and unique place in history. During the Second World War 1942-1943, the Army commissioned the use of the other Bass Strait cables to assist with operations in the battle for New Guinea and to provide a vital link between the Australian forces fighting the Japanese until the war was over. Tasmania was entirely dependent on the single cable from Stanley, via King Island for it’s only reliable tele-communications with mainland Australia. Cable Station had a small home guard garrisoned to guard over it during this time.
The cable was taken out of service in 1967 and today modern communication systems are more reliant upon ‘satellites’ and a new ‘optic fibre’ cable that was laid in June 2003 by Telstra, servicing Stanley and the rest of Tasmania. Cable Station is proud to be able to offer guests complimentary high speed internet access via the National Broadband Network (NBN).

Cable Station Accommodation includes free Wi-Fi. Guests can choose from King room or Queen room, both offering a claw foot bath and rural views overlooking the Bass Strait.

Cable Station offers stylish accommodation on a historic property. Established in 1936, the property was a telecommunications centre that carried Tasmania’s first telephone link to the mainland.

All accommodation includes a TV, DVD player and tea/coffee making facilities.
